Twitter has been found to be developing a new feature that once it goes live, users will be allowed to subscribe to push notifications for specific search terms. After subscribing to a search term, users will receive a reminder when posting new tweets with the word or phrase.
Android developer Dylan Roussel discovered this feature back in the pre-release version of the Twitter mobile app on May 31, 2022: Twitter is developing a feature that allows you to subscribe to search results. After subscribing, you will receive a tweet push notification about your search query! New Twitter features known as "Search Subscriptions" are preparing for a future version of the mobile app. It looks like it's taken directly from TweetDeck's feature. Considering that the last remaining TweetDeck app will be closed in June, it's nice to see one of the best features of the app come online elsewhere.
Searching for subscriptions looks simple and easy to use.
Roussel's tweet shows a two-step process of setting up notifications.
Enter a word or phrase in the search bar, click the bell icon on the right, and Twitter will display a message to let you know that you have subscribed.
Roussel notes that he has not received any notifications yet, so he has no idea what the notification will look like when the feature finally starts, nor how often the alert will be sent.
On the one hand, this may be a useful way to track brand mentions, etc. You can subscribe to tweets containing company names and you will be reminded even if people don't @ mention you.
On the other hand, depending on how notifications are delivered, it can be an annoying nightmare if the term subscribed will post dozens of tweets per minute.
So the question is, will Twitter notify users of every tweet, or will it only notify the most popular tweets?
Perhaps Twitter will provide the option to customize notifications so that users can set the frequency they want. We have to wait until the feature is launched before we can confirm. Currently available in Twitter Alpha, it is usually recommended for developers to use.
It will be available more widely in future updates, which could be the next update or several versions.
