Signal Tutorial-How to turn off read receipts in Signal (or turn them on)

Read receipts, a common feature on other messaging apps like WhatsApp and iMessage, appear as white indicator bubbles on messages sent in Signal. If you turn off read receipts and prevent the person on the other end from seeing that you've read their messages, you won't be able to see if they've read your messages.

Start by opening the "Signal" app on your iPhone or Android smartphone.

Next, click on your profile picture, avatar or username initials in the upper left corner.

Select the Privacy option from the Settings menu.

Finally, turn off (or turn on) the "Read receipts" setting.

As shown below, when read receipts are turned on in Signal, both checkmark bubbles will be filled with white when messages are received and read. With read receipts turned off, the bubble will be empty but a check mark will indicate that the message was delivered.

Recipients will see the same type of instructions in the text messages they send. When you turn off read receipts, neither you nor the person you're talking to can see whether the message was viewed.
